Uncorking Tomorrow's Sustainability
MSD Project
MSD is a Pharmaceutical Manufacturer in Johannesburg.
They have a very poor mains grid connection that suffers from power outages.
MSD is an essential business that manufactures and distributes products that cover a broad range of ailments including heart and respiratory health and infectious diseases.
About the project
Every power outage damages the equipment, thus they opted for an energy storage solution.
These storage systems ensure a reliable and secure energy supply, and with the combination of their PV system, they can even replace a dedicated conventional fossil fueled power plant.
This storage system can produce up to one megawatt of renewable energy.
Ground mount solar structure consists of 900 kilowatts of solar power.
A shipping container houses the 1 megawatt hour FreedomWon long life Lithium ion phosphate energy storage battery back-up.
An additional container houses two times 500 kilowatt Atess PCS inverters. These containers have been isolated and have air conditioning.
Each ATESS 500-kilowatt PCS inverter is a configurable stand-alone inverter with their own bypass cabinets operating in parallel to offer 1 megawatt of hybrid energy to the plant. The system ensures seamless switchover within 200 Milliseconds from when the grid goes off.
More Info about the project
There are three circuits supplying the 1-megawatt Atess PCS container.
- The 600 kilowatts from a grid tie supply, consisting of Ingeteam and Huawei grid tie inverters. These DC to AC units are to boost the Atess PCS inverters power capability
- The automatically switched over generator
- The utility grid
The ideal feature of this system lies in the larger battery system being the ideal result as now the customer can seamlessly switch over to their battery backup with power outages and load shedding making use of 1 megawatt of solar to supplement their energy demand during day usage.
MSD pharmaceuticals not only charges their batteries from renewable energy, but also, any excess energy is fed into the plant causing a reduction in energy usage.

The PCS inverter will reduce diesel usage, consumed by the generator during load shedding outages and save running costs significantly by utilising the PV power first and secondly utilising the 1 megawatt hour energy stored in the lithium battery. The ATESS behind-the-meter storage unit provides strong benefits, including frequency regulation and peak capacity investment deferral.
This is one off Current Automations spin-off projects with another impressive cutting-edge roll-out track record. When purchasing your ATESS equipment with Current Automation, you are guaranteed the best design, installation, and commissioning support.
